“When expectations are not clearly defined up front, trust and speed both go down.” Speed of Trust by Stephen Covey
I have been teaching a lot of classes lately at the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association ( https://atlantahomebuilders.com/) and this specific topic has come up in almost every class. There seems to be a lot of frustration with company owners and managers with their people not really performing like they had hoped. What we almost always find is that we have not taken the time to unpack who we are, what we are trying to achieve and where we are going as an organization or a department. If we as Owners, Leaders and Managers cannot answer these questions than how can we expect our team members to contribute at the highest level.
Here are a few tips I have shared from the last few classes:
- Make sure we know who we are and the values we manage the business by.
- Make sure we know what we do and why.
- Make sure we know where we are going and what we are trying to achieve.
- Make sure every person on your team has a clear job description and they understand what they are responsible for and how what they are doing contributes to the overall success of the team and organization.
You got this. Once you have started finalizing all these details make sure they are communicated to everyone in your organization or department and it must be communicated often and consistently. If you need some help reach out to me and we can talk about our Great Business Fundamentals (GBF) program and how that might be able to help you move forward.
