Teachability

Teachability is the ability and willingness to learn and put into practice whatever is needed to accomplish our goals. From “Sometimes You Win, Sometimes You Learn” by John Maxwell

Do you ever find yourself responding: “This is the way we always do it”? I think for most of us, we struggle with change. We might even think that if we change it might make me look bad because I created this process that no longer works. (Fear of what others will think) Maybe, the drama we will have to fight through as the staff or team push back just does not seem worth it. What if the changes don’t really work? (Fear) Good news! Today is the day where we tell that small, but very powerful, voice of fear to be quiet and get behind us. “Today, is the day, where become willing to put into practice whatever is needed to accomplish our goals.” It won’t be easy but you can do this.

We know, and everyone around us know, that it is way past time to deal with this person that is holding us back. They have not bought in and are a constant distraction that keeps us from moving forward. Implementing the needed changes, stealing our creativity, and dragging the whole organization down. “Today, is the day, where become willing to put into practice whatever is needed to accomplish our goals.”

We know that we have been using this same process for quite a while but it seems like it is not working for us any longer. It feels like we have grown past the old way. It seems like there is a more profitable, beneficial process that our manager has suggested but the change will be so hard and challenging to implement. Not to mention the drama we have to deal with as the team struggles with the change and new process. ” Today, is the day, where become willing to put into practice whatever is needed to accomplish our goals.”

We know we have been doing pretty well these last several months. We know we have been growing. Profits are on the rise. New opportunities are being presented to us every month. We know it is time to add another key manager to the team but we have never had this position before. They will probably require a pretty significant salary package. There will be a ton of drama and maybe even some people leaving if we bring on this position. “Today, is the day, where become willing to put into practice whatever is needed to accomplish our goals.”

We know that we have talked about the possibility of these new goals for the next 3 to 5 years but we are not really sure. Can we really do this? We have never really written down and agreed on these kinds of goals before. It might just be easier to keep doing what we have been doing and just stay the course. Can we really make that kind of impact anyway? “Today, is the day, where become willing to put into practice whatever is needed to accomplish our goals.”

You got this. The journey from Good to Great will take risk, change, adjustments, focus and effort. The journey from decent margins to amazing profitability will take risk, change, adjustments, focus and effort. The journey from Status Quo to amazing team work, communication, results and accountability will take risk, change, adjustments, focus and effort. But you totally can do this!!

Take some time this week to identify where you want to go and then write down the 3 to 5 changes that need to be made and take the “36 hours of pain” mentioned in the book Traction and make those hard decisions. Have those challenging conversations and start moving toward your new and improved future!
