Talking Your Way Out

“You can’t talk your way out of problems you behaved yourself into.” Stephen Covey

Have you ever heard someone say I just couldn’t help myself. They made me do it. It wasn’t my fault. We have always done it this way. It’s just the way it works here. All excuses for lack of accountability and responsibility. We make choices, we make decisions. We choose how to act and react to situations and people. We decide to keep doing what we have always done.

So, don’t try to talk yourself out of problems that your behavior got you into. Fess up. Step up. Admit the mistake. Take responsibility. Get forgiveness or apologize and move on. Listen to the voice of change in your head or heart. Listen to the person suggesting new thoughts and new ways. Don’t listen to the voice of fear and uncertainty of change.

Hopefully, better decisions and choices create different and better results. Just don’t blame others for your behavior. Don’t blame the staff member, the manager, or the department head for results from a broken, outdated and ineffective systems, processes, or philosophies.

You can’t talk your way out of problems you behaved yourself into. Change. Take a new path. Try a new process. Take a chance! Work your way out of your problems and challenges.
