Organize and Execute

Organize and execute around priorities.

I teach a Priority Management Class: How to Maximize Your Time. In that class we unpack the challenges of living in the Whirlwind. A term coined by Sean Covey in The 4 Disciplines of Execution. The Whirlwind describes how most of our days and weeks feel. We seem to have have way more TO DO than we have time to get to. And, when we do get things done, they do not seem to be the most important things that can make the biggest impact. But, if we know where we are going, and we know what we are trying to achieve, we can begin to tailor our Task List to the more, or most, important tasks. Organize and execute around priorities.

In his book, Getting Things Done, David Allen shares 5 basic steps to getting better organized and staying organized. Hope you get a chance to read or listen to this amazing book and take your next steps toward better efficiency, productivity and life balance!

  1. Capture Everything: Capture anything that crosses your mind. Nothing is too big or small! These items go directly into your inboxes.

  2. Clarify: Process what you’ve captured into clear and concrete action steps. Decide if an item is a project, next action, or reference.

  3. Organize: Put everything into the right place. Add dates to your calendar, delegate projects to other people, file away reference material, and sort your tasks.

  4. Review: Frequently look over, update, and revise your lists.

  5. Engage: Get to work on the important stuff.
