“While we don’t always get what we want, we always get what we choose.”
15 Invaluable Laws of Growth by John Maxwell
I don’t think we always realize that the results we receive are a direct result of the choices we make. The good book says that we will reap what we sow. Sometimes we look at the challenges of a situation and often wonder, why me? But if we look closer and maybe think back a few hours, a few days, or a few weeks, we might see how the decision we made, the conversations we had, the comments we shared were the seeds we planted that are now producing the results we are dealing with.
Stephen Covey in 7 Habits of Highly Effective People reminds us to “Seek First to Understand and Then to be Understood.” Let’s take a moment to try to understand the impact of the decision before we make it. I think sometimes we just react and do not realize the impact our decision/ reaction will make. If we just take a deep breath. If we just take a moment to think. Think beyond the immediate pressing decision at hand, we might see a bigger picture of the situation and make a better decision with better results. In his book Traction, Gino Wickman calls this a Clarity Break. Pause for just a second and think about the client, the employee, your team member, the customer, the department, the cost, your family and how this might impact others. If we pause, we might find that we make a different decisions which will create different outcomes.
You can do this! Let’s slowly start making better decisions so we can begin to receive better results. Begin with the end in mind. Have you considered if the decision moves you toward your desired outcome or is it just a reaction to the moment? If you spend a few minutes thinking about the results we are trying to achieve or what impact the decision we might make will have on the bigger environment, we might choose differently. We might make a better decision.
