Effective Goal Setting

From Executive Toughness by Jason Selk

Jason identifies 3 obstacles to effective goal setting.

  1. Infrequency: looking at goals once a year or even four times a year is not frequently enough. Daily review is best but weekly review should be the minimum.
  2. Under-accountability: “Most individuals neglect to make their goals measurable and do not consistently evaluate a score, or progression, toward winning. Without keeping score, it’s very difficult , if not impossible, to be accountable to just how well you are doing.
  3. Paradox of the end goal: when we emphasize the end results more than we pay attention to the means to achieve it, we come face to face with this paradox. Focusing on the results distracts us from the process we need to achieve our goals. If you are completely focused on the results, you cannot be paying attention to the actions you need to take to make it happen.

Now that we are halfway through 2022 let’s stop and review our last 6 months. What were our goals? How did we do? What is holding us back? What adjustments do we need to make? Now let’s transition and look at the remainder of 2022 and begin to pencil in goals for 2023. Let’s decide where we want to go, what we want to achieve and what impact we want to make and the let’s get started.

One philosophy we use is “It’s not real if it is not written.” Carve out a few hours this week or next week and look back and learn. Adjust and look ahead to what we want to do. Write it down. Share it with the team and get started. You got this. 2022 can still be your best year ever!!
