Bad systems or bad people?

“So often the problem is on the system, not on the people. If you put good people in bad systems, you get bad results. You have to water the flowers you want to grow.”
Stephen covey

I have heard it said that 90% plus of poor performance is not caused by bad people but by poor systems and processes. So, for those of us in leadership or management it creates a need to produce effective and efficient processes for our teams and our people. When our team is unsure or unclear about what they are doing, how to do things, and why they are doing things, we lose performance and we lose their buy in. This impacts employee performance, morale, productivity, profitability, and customer satisfaction.

We need clarity so we can get buy in and maximum performance which will create consistency which will allow us to move toward improvement!

  1. In studying biblical hebrew, I came across the translation of the words good and bad. According to the teaching they would be better translated functional and dysfunctional. God flooded the earth which could be seen as bad. Thing is the people were so “bad” that God wanted to cleanse it and try to bring about good/function. It seems the greatest “good” a person could be would to be very functional within God’s “system”.
