Practice Makes Perfect

We've all heard it since childhood: practice makes perfect. And there's real truth in it — repetition builds skill, builds confidence, builds results. But there's a darker side to this principle that most people never think about.

Practice works in both directions. You can practice excellence. You can also practice failure.

"The question isn't whether you're practicing. You're always practicing something. The question is: what exactly are you rehearsing every single day?"

If you consistently avoid making decisions, you get better at avoiding decisions. If you practice dismissing your team's ideas, you get better at dismissing ideas. If you practice blame instead of accountability, you build an organization that does the same. Habits compound — for better or for worse.

Meaningful improvement requires intentional practice of better habits and better leadership behaviors. It requires choosing what you want to rehearse.

15 Leadership Behaviors Worth Practicing

Here are fifteen specific areas where intentional practice will build a better leader and a stronger organization:

  1. Make others feel safe — Create an environment where people speak freely without fear.
  2. Make decisions, less waiting — Momentum matters. Decide and move.
  3. Communicate expectations — Clarity is a gift you give your team every day.
  4. Challenge people to think — Ask questions instead of giving answers.
  5. Be accountable to others — Model the behavior you want to see.
  6. Lead by example — Your team watches what you do, not just what you say.
  7. Measure and reward performance — What gets measured gets improved.
  8. Provide continuous feedback — Not once a year. Ongoing, specific, honest.
  9. Properly allocate and deploy talent — Put your people in positions to win.
  10. Ask questions, seek counsel — The best leaders are curious, not certain.
  11. Solve problems; avoid procrastination — Address things early, before they grow.
  12. Positive energy and positive attitude — Energy is contagious. Lead with the right kind.
  13. Be a great teacher — Invest in developing your people, not just using them.
  14. Invest in relationships — Trust is the foundation of everything in leadership.
  15. Genuinely enjoy your responsibilities — If you've lost your love for this, find it again. Your team can tell.
