Can I Really Do That?

There is a story in the Bible about a guy named Nehemiah. Nehemiah felt like he should check on his home town. To his surprise it was devastated. Another country had come in and taken over and the place spiraled out of control. Everyone lost hope. The city became run down and neglected. The city walls fell down and the city lay in ruins. 92 years. 92 years!

Nehemiah felt like he needed to go do something so he ask his boss, the king, for some time off to go help his city. His boss was a gracious leader so he said that would be fine, take all the time you need and let me know how I can help.

Nehemiah surveyed the damage. Developed a plan. Shared the vision with the remaining city people and began to rebuild the wall. Gate by gate, family by family, day by day they slowly began to work together. They began seeing results of their labor. Hope began to well up inside them. A little city pride started coming back. Pretty soon they were finished. New wall. New city. New hope. Fresh vision. One guy. One guy!

The process:

  1. See the need
  2. Survey the damage/ challenge/ opportunity
  3. Develop a plan.
  4. Share the plan/ vision
  5. Assemble a team
  6. Get started
  7. Celebration the Wins! The small steps of progress.
  8. Re-enforce the Hope!
  9. Encourage the accomplishment. Progress. Pride. Celebrate.

So, how long do you think it took to rebuild 92 years of devastation? 52 days. 52 days. 52 days! Less than 2 months.

Recap. 92 years of devastation. 1 man with hope, vision, a plan and some administrative and leadership skills, redeveloped an entire city, rebuilt the walls and brought back hope and pride. One man!

You guessed it. That one person could be you. Doesn’t matter what your back ground is. Doesn’t matter your education. Doesn’t matter that you’ve never built a city before. Just go do it. You can change the world. Yep, you. Just one person. 92 days!!

  1. Good morning. When Sanbalat and Tobiah tried to distract him by suggesting they meet in the desert he refused. He said he was doing an important work. The “work” stacking and placing one stone upon the other. Life is often tedious and routine but to those who refuse to be distracted the Great Work of the Kingdom will be accomplished as one stone is placed upon the other starting with the Chief Corner Stone
