Direction

It’s direction not intention that determine destination.

Great insight. I have been with a lot of organizations where the leadership assumed everyone new what to do. What we do not always realize is assuming can create a massive amount problems, frustration, turnover, loss of income and even losing clients and business. We can’t afford to assume everyone knows what do do. We cannot assume everyone knows where we are going. We cannot assume that everyone already knows why they are doing their job. In most of the companies I coach we realize very early on that our team does not know any of these things.

There is an awesome statement that my pastor used all the time with his ministry leaders. “It is not real if it is not written.” If we want the biggest impact in our department or organization, we need to make sure everyone is very clear on the WHY. WHEN. WHO. HOW. We can say a lot of things but if it is not written, reviewed and trained it is not real. You cannot measure conversation. There are no metrics with conversation. If you want in increase employee satisfaction and production you need to write it down, review, equip and train. Does everyone have a clear job description. Does everyone know where we are going as an organization? Does everyone know how their jobs helps the team get the communicated results.

Our actions and words must match who we are and where we want to go. If we are trying to do one thing but our words and behaviors are saying something different there is confusion. Confusion creates uncertainty. Uncertainty creates hesitancy. Hesitancy creates waiting or holding back because I am unsure. That cost time, money and morale. So let’s take some time this week to make sure where we are going is crystal clear. What we are trying to achieve and why we even exist. Write it down. Communicate it. Teach it. Train it. Measure our results and move the entire game to a new level.
