“No business can grow faster than their people.” “No company can grow revenues consistently faster than its ability to get enough of the right people to implement that growth and still become a great company.” Packard’s law
Create a culture of discipline with the right people.
I know for all of us the most challenging part of what we do is people. It always seems to come down to people. If things are going great, it is because great people have made it happen. If it is not going so great, usually people are struggling. So how do we find the right people and how do we create a culture of discipline. There are a few basic fundamentals we need to put in place.
- Who are we? What values are important to us? Have we communicated these values and do we hire, fire and manage from our values?
- What are our people doing? Do they have a clear job description? Do they know what they are responsible for? Are they held accountable for what they do and the results they achieve?
- Do we know where we are going and what we are trying to achieve? How can we get buy in if our team is unsure of where we are going? To get buy in we have to share our goals and what we are trying to achieve and confirm they passionately want to go with us.
- If we define and communicate our values, clarify where we are going and what we are trying to achieve, and if we get buy in, then we can move our people from a job to responsibility and ownership of what we hired them to do.
The first step in a Culture of Discipline is spending some time getting these few fundamentals in place. Then, you as the department head, owner or leader will need to live these out day-by-day. Living and referencing your values. Confirming everyone is crystal clear on what they are doing and what they are responsible and accountable for. Communicating what we are trying to achieve. Delegating and empowering each team member to own and be responsible for their part on the team and their results.
