You Must Measure

Working with all types of clients all over the country, I find that measuring is one of the basic disciplines to great results that most companies, or churches, have not figured out how to execute. I find that most organizations are doing a lot of talking. We are have lots of conversations but conversations cannot be managed. We cannot be held accountable for what we might, or might not have said. Our team mates cannot be held accountable for conversations where I remember something different than my team mate. “If it is not written, it is not real.” A great philosophy and process for all organizations.  You cannot manage what you do not measure and you cannot manage conversations.

We must first decide where we are going and what we are trying to achieve and then we need to figure how can we measure our results weekly and monthly to see how we are doing versus our goals. If we do not know where are are going or what we are trying to achieve then we don’t need to measure. If we have decided what we are trying to achieve and what our goals are, we need to communicate that to the organization.  We need to communicate  our goals to our department as well. then we need to measure our progress or lack of progress. Reviewing our metrics and results create accountability but also the chance to review and adjust to improve our results.

You got this! Takes some time to get very clear on what you are trying to achieve or what impact you are trying to make in your market area or ministry. Once you decide, write it down and share it with your team. Now, let’s start figuring out how we are going to track and measure our results weekly and monthly. We need to begin to watch for trends over time. We like to use a 13 week running report that show our results week over week. How are we doing? What are our results? Gather the team and unpack our results and brian storm and discuss how we can adjust, fix or do even better theses next 13 weeks.
